Winter Cosmetics
Let’s face it, most of us hit snooze a dozen times and then run out the door to work with wet hair and no make-up. The trick to looking fresh and polished during the daytime in the winter when you don’t feel like getting all made up is simply tossing high quality lip gloss into your purse. We like Estée Lauder gloss as the packaging is pretty and the stuff itself isn’t too sticky.
When 5 p.m. hits and you’re ready to shut off your laptop and leave your cubicle, reach into that well-prepped handbag of yours and pull out something that will sex up your appearance for Happy Hour. We’re talking about some smashingly dramatic red lipstick. We’re partial to the Givenchy selection which boasts everything from Red Clubbing to Red Affair and Party Red.
Having well manicured nails is a simple way to appear put-together and polished. During the day opt for something clear and neutral as nobody’s going to take you seriously in a big meeting if you’re flashing around vampy fingers. In the evening, take 15 minutes before you go out for a posh dinner to coat those nails in something more fun, specifically a polish that sparkles as it’ll shimmer in candlelight as you reach for a glass of wine and nosh on tapas.
Look Good at the Office and on the Town
Most of us don’t have the presence of mind in the morning to dress ourselves in work-appropriate gear and pack a whole new outfit to slip into for an after-office-hours date. Don’t worry, it’s easy to make one look work for both occasions. This season it’s all about the sweater dress. It’s comfy and cozy and lets you show off your legs and curves at the same time. Pair the dress with a good pair of tights or leggings and your look is almost complete. During the day, finish off your outfit with a warm cozy pair of winter boots (from Columbia or Sorel) tied up over your tights. You’ll look funky and weather appropriate. In the evening, slip off that footwear and into a pair of dress boots, preferably of the pointy toed and high heeled variety.
When you’re almost ready to head out into the night for a wild yet classy time, switch your lipstick and wallet from a day-appropriate colourful leather tote or handbag, to a delicate clutch.
Sub-Zero Ready Gear
Now that we’ve got the make-up, outfit and accessories well organized, we need to tackle the subject of outerwear. The sub-zero ready gear you pile on for your walk to work is not the same stuff you’ll slither into on a Saturday night when you plan to down glasses of champagne and comment on modern art at a swishy gallery opening.
During the day, forget about keeping your hair smooth and styled and opt for warmth with the help of a cashmere, wool or knit hat. Make sure it covers your ears.
In the evening stay cool, yet cozy, by embracing a little Parisian glamour. Snag yourself a beret and make sure you wear it slightly slouchy and off to the side and pair it with a lot of dark eyeliner.
When you’re out and about in the afternoon hours running errands, swathe your hands in a thick pair of mittens. Exposing your digits to the arctic air will cause them to become dry and icky.
It’s hard to look fashionable hailing a cab after a night out with an awkward mittened hand. So, under the cloak of midnight, make sure your hands are warmed by a fashionable pair of gloves instead.
Because we live in an insanely chilly country, doesn’t mean we have to eschew style altogether when we’re ready to go out. When you’re off for a glamorous evening, ditch the parka and pull on winter coat, preferably a wool one that reaches to your knees at the very least.
There fashionable shoppers, now you’re ready to face the cold air at any hour and look amazing while you do.
